Dreamcatchers and feathers on a thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two dreamcatchers with hanging feathers, one large web with a radiating spiderweb pattern and a smaller ring above it. The linework is dark blue-grey with some soft shading on the feathers, and pink and blue flowers sit at the bottom of the design. The design wraps along the side of the thigh, with the subject lying down and her face not shown.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At Tallow Ford the toll was never money. The weaver who kept the bridge took a feather from every traveller and tied it to the willow ring she hung on her gate, and when a man asked why, she said the web had to catch something or the wind would take the sleep out of the valley.

One autumn a drover called Ansel Pike came over with twelve sheep and no feathers. His dreams followed him like dogs, and he said so. The weaver looked at him for a long while, then gave him a ring the size of a cartwheel's hub and told him to hang it over his bed in the far village, the one with the bell that never stopped.

He went. He strung the web across the rafters of his loft, and the feathers hung down like a row of small grey flags. Each night the dreams ran into the spiral and got lost among the threads, and each morning he found one or two left behind, bent and tangled, which he burned in the grate before breakfast.

Years later, when Ansel was old, a girl came to the bridge with a feather in her hair and no toll to pay. The weaver had died in the spring. The ring was still on the gate, and at its centre the feathers had gone the colour of rain. The girl asked who had left them. Ansel took her hand and walked her out to the water. "Whoever came first," he said, and he tied on one more.
