Dreamer quote beside a glowing doorway on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A teal and yellow doorway with ornate scrollwork sits at the left of the forearm, with pale rays fanning out from its opening. To its right, the black serif lettering reads "If you're a dreamer, come in" across two lines. The linework is bold and the colour is limited to teal, yellow and black on a dark background.

The door in the hills of the kingdom of Vellmoor had been painted the colour of shallow sea for as long as the bakers' children could remember, and nobody had ever seen it open. You were the one who found the latch, a cold brass thing shaped like a sleeping bird, on the morning the frost came early and the sheep would not leave the lower field. You pressed it with your thumb and the wood gave way without a sound, and a fan of pale light spread across the grass as if someone had lifted a lamp behind the threshold.

Your sister called from the lane. Your mother's shawl was still on its hook, the bread in the oven was going black, and behind you the village bell had started its noon ringing. You could have shut the door. Half the village would have told you that was wise. Instead you stood on the sill beneath a gold-edged scroll of ironwork and listened to the hum coming from inside, a sound like a fiddle string someone had tuned very carefully and then forgotten.
Inside there was no room, only a corridor of rays reaching up and out, and at its far end a man in a coat stitched from old maps was writing on the wall with a stub of charcoal. He did not look round. "Shut it if you're a sensible person," he said, not unkindly. "Leave it open and you'll owe me a sentence."
You thought of the bread. You thought of the frost. Then you stepped through and pulled the door closed behind you, and the bell stopped mid-ring, and the whole of Vellmoor was suddenly very far away.
