Script quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine black script quote runs diagonally along the forearm, reading "Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live" over two lines. The letters have thin, even linework with a slight shadow and a uniform ink tone. The photograph is black and white, with a blurred kitchen background and a dark sleeve at the left edge.

Dear Tom, the kettle has boiled twice since I started this, and the gull on the chimney has been shouting at the bins since six, so forgive the smudges. Your uncle's boat is still on the slip where he left it. I have not had the heart to paint over the name, though the paint has peeled away from the S and now it reads like a rude word.

Mr Harrow came up from the post office on Tuesday with the parcel of books you asked for, and he wanted to know how you were getting on in Glasgow as though you were a regiment. I told him you wrote nicer letters than you ever wrote to me. He laughed, then said you'd told him something at the counter the week before you left, that he ought to laugh as much as he breathed. I had forgotten you were ever that cheeky.
I went down to the boathouse yesterday to fetch the oars. On the lintel, under your uncle's pencilled tide times, was your own careful handwriting, the same sentence he used to say over the teapot: laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live. You must have been eleven. I didn't know you had been listening to him at all.
So I am posting you his good pencils in the tin with the dented lid, and this letter, and I want you to know the boat is still here if you ever want to row out and look at the water. Write when the gulls let you. Your loving aunt, Morag.
