Dreamer script on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small black script word, dreamer, sits on the side of the torso below the arm. The thin, even linework has a flowing handwritten character with little shading. The skin is pale and the composition is close, with a grey top and a cream knitted jumper pulled up around the tattoo.

Dear Maud, the Bramleys came in early this year, so Dad has had us up the ladders since half five. The whole orchard smells of windfalls and wet bark, and the wasps are staggering about under the trees like they've been at the cider already. Mum says to tell you the kettle still sings the same tune, in case you were wondering whether anything here had changed without you.

Dad has been writing on the crates again. You know his hand, all loops and joined-up tails, the way he wrote your name on the seed packets when you were small. This morning he took a pencil to the lid of the crate by the Discovery tree and wrote one word and wouldn't say why. I asked him about it over tea and he just tapped the wood and said, that tree was planted the spring you left, so it was for whoever stared longest out of the top branches.

I'll confess I climbed highest today. I sat in the crown with my boots hooked over a limb and the whole valley went blue to the hills, and I thought about your train somewhere past Hereford, and the sky looked so wide I forgot to be cross with anyone. When I came down, Dad was waiting at the foot of the ladder with his hands in his pockets. He said the crate wasn't for the tree at all. He'd only put it there so I'd climb up and look.

I've pressed a leaf from that top branch between the pages, so you'll know it's the right one. Keep it somewhere you can see it from the bed. Write back soon, and tell me what the sea looks like when you're not too tired to notice.

Love, Nell
