Black fine line script reading Just a dream away with a small Mickey Mouse outline at the end, tattooed on the inner wrist.

Script quote "Just a dream away" on wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote reading "Just a dream away" runs diagonally across the inner wrist, with the words stacked and looping along a single line. A small outlined Mickey Mouse head sits at the end of the final word. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or colour, and the photograph is framed closely on the wrist against a plain turquoise background.

Mind the windfalls, they'll have your ankles, and sit where the wasps aren't. Right, pick up the basket. You want the story of the Pennick sisters and the last tree in Hollin Cross, and you'll not get it with the apples going soft in your lap.

Ada Pennick kept a biscuit tin under her bed with a bus ticket to Ledbury, a torn programme from the travelling picture house, and a pencil drawing of a round-eared mouse her brother had done on the back of a seed catalogue. Every August she climbed the old Bramley with a satchel and read aloud the words she'd copied from the lantern slides: just a dream away. Her mother said dreams were for people who already had their boots on.

The autumn the picture house closed, the projectionist walked home over the ridge with the reels slung across his back, and he stopped at the orchard gate to rest his cough. He had a daughter in Bristol and no wish to carry film any further. He gave Ada the last reel, still wound tight, and told her to hold it up to the sun on the day she was ready to leave. She did. The frames threw a road across the grass, running off the edge of the picture, and the light came through it gold and wavering.

She never reached Bristol that year. But the tin is still under the bed, and the Bramley still drops its fruit on the same grey stone, and on a warm night, if you lean your ear to the trunk, they say you can hear the projector clicking away somewhere past the hedge.
