Black fine line script tattoo reading dreamer on the side of a torso, partly covered by a grey knitted sleeve.

Dreamer script on the side ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is the single word dreamer written in a thin, flowing black script on the side of the torso, close to the ribs. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading. A grey knitted fabric and a white patterned jumper are pulled back at the top of the frame, and the skin tone fills most of the composition.

Every August the Pennick orchard dropped its windfalls faster than the pickers could gather them, and Maud Ashdown, the youngest of seven and never once asked to help, took to lying under the Bramley tree at noon with her head on a folded sack. Her father called her idle. Her mother said she was thinking, which was worse.

One afternoon a stranger came up the lane leading a donkey laden with a trunk of pencils, and asked for water. He drank from the trough, looked at the girl under the tree, and said she had the look of someone somewhere else. Maud told him she was only resting. He said resting was what people called it when they were busy elsewhere in their heads. Before she could ask his business he pressed a folded paper into her hand, a single word inked on it in a fine, looping hand, and walked on up the road with the donkey following.

She kept the paper in her sleeve all week. When the apples were ready for pressing she carried it to the cider house and read the word aloud to the wasps, who did not care. Her father found her there at dusk and did not scold. He sat on an upturned crate, asked what the word was, and when she said it was apparently the thing she was, he laughed in the way that means he is not laughing at you. He asked what she had been dreaming under the tree. She talked until the lamps were lit, and he listened without once looking at the sky.

Next morning the paper was gone from her sleeve, but her father had pencilled the word in small careful letters along the inside of the cider barrel, and beneath it had left a clean space, as if he expected her to fill it.
