Drink Me potion bottle flash sheet

Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows six separate panels, each with a different glass bottle or flask, including one topped with an eyeball and another with a flame-like stopper. Most designs include a ribbon or scroll reading Drink Me, and the bottles are rendered with soft pencil shading and highlights. The artwork is entirely black and grey on white panels, arranged in a grid on a black background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bottle had been at the back of the cratch locker since Dad's day, wrapped in oilcloth that smelled of paraffin and river mud. I only unwrapped it because the bilge pump had quit again and I needed something to do with my hands while Mo swore at the gate at Hythe Lock. It was squat-bellied glass with a stopper like a little shuttered eye, and a paper ribbon knotted round its neck. DRINK ME, it said, in brown letters gone soft at the edges.

Mo said it was rubbish, something Dad picked up at a car boot sale in Banbury to make the grandchildren laugh. I didn't argue. The liquid inside was the colour of stewed tea, and when I held it to the lamp a ring of bright water lay trapped in the belly like a small moon. I pulled the stopper and the smell reached me first: Dad's Sunday brew, sugar and scorched toast, filling the cabin before the kettle had even boiled. I took one mouthful. It tasted of nothing I could name, only of being scolded kindly and sent to bed early.

Then the gate groaned open and the cut began to pour through, the hull lifting and swinging on its ropes. Mo shouted something the wind took. When I looked down, the stopper was on the bench where I'd set it, and its painted eye had turned towards the window, following the rising water the way Dad used to watch a kettle. I corked the bottle, tied the ribbon back on, and set it on the roof where the afternoon sun could find it. Mo can have the gate. I'll keep the tea.
