Three tribal sea turtle designs
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
Three sea turtle designs in a bold Polynesian-inspired tribal style are drawn in solid black on a plain white background. The top turtle has a plumeria flower and a lei-like border, the middle one has a patterned shell with a leaf motif and stripes, and the bottom one has a sunburst and triangular detailing. The designs are arranged down the page with plenty of white space and no body part visible.

Come closer, where the lamp reaches your face. No, the youngest always sits in the warm sand, that is how it has always been. Now listen. When the sea was still new and the reef was young, three turtles swam out past the breakers to fetch a flower that grew only on the drowned atoll. One turtle alone could not carry a lei home, my grandmother used to say, because a lei is a promise, and a promise needs more than one pair of flippers.

The eldest, Ulu, carried the white plumeria pinned to her back, its petals curled like the tips of waves. The second, Keta, wore the palm-leaf pattern, every stripe a rain track running down the mountain to the lagoon. The youngest, Tui, had the sun on her shell, a burst of triangles she could never see. All the way out she asked the others what it looked like, and they told her it was like a fire that never burned anything.
At the atoll the three of them linked their borders into a closed ring around the flower. The moment the circle sealed, the petals began to fade, because a closed circle has no room for anything to come in. Ulu said they must leave a gap. So Keta loosened one knot, Tui held the loose end in her teeth, and the flower drifted away on the current towards the shore, where a child not yet born would pick it up.
That is why every turtle's border has a gap in it, and why the old ones swim with their backs to the sun, waiting for whoever is still out past the reef to find their way home.
