Eagle and roses across a full back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large eagle with spread wings and extended talons fills the upper back, with its head turned towards the top right. Red roses and peony-like blooms with green leaves wrap around the lower back and right side. The eagle is shaded in black and grey with fine feather detail, while the flowers use saturated red and deep green tones on a pale skin background.

Dear Ruth,

The rain has not let up since Tuesday, and the flower market at Smithfield is a river of cardboard and bruised stems. I've sold four buckets of peonies and given the rest to the pie man, who said he'd stand them in his window to make the queue feel less like a queue. You'd have laughed. Dad's old pitch is still under the blue tarp, the one with the tear where the wind keeps getting in.

You won't believe what happened on Thursday. A bird came down out of the cloud over the roofs, bigger than any gull, its wings wider than my stall was long, and it landed on the rose crate as if it had booked the spot. Nobody screamed. Mr Okafor from the fishmonger's just stood there holding a crate of eels. The eagle looked at us all, then turned its head towards the clock tower as though someone up there had called its name, and went off into the grey without taking a single stem.

I've thought about that all weekend. Dad always said the red roses were for people who came back and the peonies were for those who didn't need asking twice. I don't know which one the eagle was. I left a bunch of the deep red ones on the crate, wet and heavy, and this morning they were gone, the stems stripped clean and laid in a neat row along the tarp edge.

Write back soon and tell me whether the sea air agrees with you.

Love, Maggie
