Black lace scrollwork and pink flowers on the ribs
Blackwork · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A tall, ornate vine of black lace-like scrollwork curls up the skin, with paisley-shaped leaves, swirls and small dotted detail. Two soft, pink-red flowers with shaded petals sit either side of the central vine and fade into the skin at their edges. The black linework is crisp and dense while the floral areas are loosely shaded, and the design fills the frame against pale skin.

Agnes Pell kept her spare bobbins in a biscuit tin, and the tin was older than the church clock. Every winter the lace-makers of Hollin Row sat at their pillows in the cold back room of the mill, pricking patterns onto card, and every winter Agnes was told to draw nothing that did not grow in the parish. Peonies were for funerals and weddings, the overseer said, and vines were for hedges. She drew them anyway, in soot ink, on the margins of pattern books nobody else opened.

The trouble started when the mill owner's daughter came asking for a veil border nobody had woven before. Agnes did not argue. She sat up three nights with a candle stub, pricking a vine that climbed and curled and forked into leaves shaped like teardrops, with a dot at every turn so the needle would know where to pause. On the fourth morning she went back to the room and found the pillows rattling, every bobbin turned to face the window.
Her pink wool was in the same tin, a skein of dye that had never taken properly. She threaded it through the black lace on the morning the veil was finished, and the flowers came out soft at the edges, as though someone had breathed on them. The daughter wore the veil to church, and the vicar's wife leaned over the pew to ask where the border had come from.
Agnes told her it had always been there, under the pattern, waiting for someone patient enough to lift it.
