Vintage floral bouquet on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cascading bouquet of peonies, roses, lilies, irises and blue bell-shaped flowers, with green leaves and buds, covers the outer upper arm. The shading is soft and painterly, with fine detail in the petals and smooth gradients between pink, red, orange and blue. The bouquet is composed diagonally from the shoulder towards the elbow, against bare skin and a white lace top.

The snow had shut the road over Kirk Fell on Tuesday, and by Thursday the only colour left in the Coldharbour Inn was the bunch of flowers her mother had painted on the back of a tea tray. Nell kept it propped against the taproom tap, where the fire could reach it, because her father said a picture that cold would crack.

The stranger came in at dusk with frost in his beard and a leather case under his arm. He said he was a botanist sent by a Leeds nursery, that he had walked up from the station with a letter for the parish, and that he would pay for a bed and a look at the tray. Nell watched him tilt it to the lamp and go quiet, the way men do in church when the hymn turns out to be one they half remember.
He pointed to the blue bells at the edge of the bunch. Those, he said, were a cross the nursery had lost in the hard summer of 1841, when a blight took the glasshouse and the only seed left was in a widow's garden at the foot of the fell. He asked whether anyone still grew them. Nell said her mother had kept a peony under a bell jar in the yard for twenty years, and that it had died the autumn before last.
In the morning the thaw had begun. Nell went out to the back wall with a trowel and her father's coat, and under the wet sacking by the door, pushing through the grey slush, was a single green shoot with a bud already tight at its tip. She cut nothing. She left it where it was, and went in to tell the stranger the road was open.
