The brass globe above the galley stove had been bolted there since the ship fitted out at Pompey, and Cook Halloran swore it was the only thing aboard that never once rolled out of true. On the third day out of Halifax, Able Seaman Tom Reddaway came down the ladder with a dented tin of pears and a question he had clearly rehearsed. Could the cook show him where the mail went from, and how long a letter took to reach a farm outside Ohio? Halloran pointed at the globe with a ladle. Two weeks if the weather held, he said, and longer if the weather had opinions. The boy nodded as though that was a sum he could live with.
The weather had opinions. For nine days the galley lived in a sweat of boiling water and wet rope, and the globe swung on its hook like a bell nobody dared ring. Reddaway kept his tin of pears on the shelf beside it and never opened it.
When the ship turned for home, Halloran unhooked the globe, wrapped it in a clean tea towel and pressed it into the boy's hands. You'll want to know where you are, he said, and Reddaway did not argue. Behind them the stove ticked as it cooled, and the bare brass hook swung gently above the pots.
