Realistic branches and foliage on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo covers the upper arm with tangled bare branches, dry leaves and a textured, rounded form that resembles a pinecone or bird. The shading is soft and highly detailed, with dark recesses and fine highlights giving depth to the wood and foliage. The palette is limited to earthy browns and tans with small touches of green, and the design fills the frame against a dark background.

Mum says to tell you the wind took the last of the leaves on Tuesday, a dry rattle across the forecourt like someone shuffling old playing cards. I went out with a bin bag and came back with a fistful of branches instead, because I could not bring myself to throw them away.

The pinecone you left on the dashboard of the Corolla has cracked open in the heat. Every scale has lifted like a little hinged door, and the seeds have gone somewhere under the passenger seat where I will find them in June. I keep thinking it looks like something trying to take off, or something that gave up halfway. You always said the road out past Calvary Flats would make a liar of anyone who called the desert empty, and I believed you, which is why I have been driving out to the wash every evening with a flask and nothing much to say to it.
There was a bird on the fence post on Thursday, grey and patient, watching the tumbleweed pile up against the wire. It did not fly when I stopped the car. It just turned its head, as if it had been waiting for someone to notice it was there.
I have put the cone on the windowsill where the afternoon light can get at it, and the branches are drying in a jar by the kettle. Come home when the leaves are down properly. I will have the kettle on and the road swept clear for you, and you can tell me what you saw out past the flats.
