Eagle, globe and anchor with tribal wings

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A central eagle, globe and anchor emblem is flanked by bold tribal-style wing and flame flourishes. The solid black linework is combined with grey shading on the globe, feathers and anchor. The tattoo is centred on a close crop of the lower back, above jeans and a studded belt, and the ink contrasts against warm skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Marta kept a rosemary bed under the harbour wall, and every spring a grey eagle came down to drink from the rain butt by her gate. Her son had gone to sea on a coaster called the Halcyon Jane and had not written since the autumn. The eagle, she told the postman, had a bent beak and wings with fanned tips like smoke, and it carried a brass ball in its talons that caught the light.

The postman laughed and said eagles did not carry globes. But that April a parcel came from Liverpool with no letter inside, only a length of ship's chain cut into links, each one stamped with a small round world. Marta hung the links on her gate. Each morning the eagle came and turned them with its beak, as if it were looking for one particular link and had not found it yet.

On the ninth morning the eagle dropped the brass ball into the rain butt. When Marta fished it out, the ball had split along its middle, and inside lay a folded scrap of paper gone soft with water. The writing was her son's. It said the anchor was for holding fast and the wings were for coming home. She read it twice, then walked down to the harbour wall and waited, because the tide was turning and the Jane was due in on it.

The ship came in at dusk with her lamps lit. The eagle rode the top of the mast with its wings spread wide, edged gold by the last of the sun, and it did not leave until a man in a salt-stained coat stepped onto the quay and lifted his cap to the sky. Marta went home and found the rosemary had flowered overnight, the whole bed gone blue.
