Eagle in horseshoe on the back of a hand

Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A bold eagle with spread wings and a hooked head sits inside a horseshoe on the back of a hand, with a pink rose and dark leaves above it. The linework is thick and black, with solid fills and some grey shading across the wings and body. Red, pink, orange and yellow ink sit against the black and grey, and the design is centred on the hand with the fingers curled at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Tomasz,

The horseshoe came off the barn door the week after you left, so I've nailed it over the kitchen window instead, points up, the way your father always said so the luck doesn't run out the bottom. Mrs Okafor from the feed shop thinks I've lost my mind. I told her the eagle in the middle is for you, because you're the only one of us who ever sees anything from that high up, and she laughed and said it looks more like a chicken that has been in a fight.

The road out past Cold Springs is the one you'll be on tonight. I looked it up on the map at the library, the stretch where the sand comes over the tarmac in drifts and the dead saguaro stand about like men waiting for a bus. Ring me from the lay-by by the water tower if the signal holds. I'll be up. I've bought the good tea, the one with the bergamot that you pretend you don't like.

Something flowered in the garden this morning, a single pink bloom on the old briar by the gate, the first since the frost. I cut it and put it in the jam jar on the sill beside the horseshoe, and it's still there now, going papery at the edges, the colour of a sunburn. I thought you would want to know that something back here is still flowering while you're out in all that dust.

Come home by Thursday, love. The door's on the latch, the kettle's full, and the eagle's watching the lane.

Ellen
