Snarling wolf and red rose on an arm

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A snarling wolf head in black, grey and orange faces right, with bared fangs and a red tongue, and a few drops of red below its mouth. A red rose with green leaves sits at the lower left of the design. Bold outlines, solid fills and a bright palette give it a classic traditional look against the skin.

Dear Pat,

I nearly didn't open the envelope from the reunion committee, then I saw your name on the list of people who'd said yes, and I sat down on the stairs to read the rest. You always said you'd come if I did. So I'm coming. Don't make me regret it by being smug about the car park.

Do you remember the wolf on the gym wall? Mr Dacre painted it the summer we were fourteen, a grey snarl with orange eyes, and the head boy said it looked like the caretaker's dog after a bad week. We spent every lunchtime deciding who it would bite. I thought of it when I found the old photo of the rose bush behind the bike sheds, the one we pinched cuttings from and killed by October. Red as a pillar box, with thorns like teeth.

The committee asked for a memory to pin on the noticeboard. I wrote down the afternoon you dared me to climb the wall under the wolf's jaw, and I fell, and you carried me to the nurse with my knee bleeding through my sock. I didn't put in the bit where you wouldn't let go of my hand the whole way, because it's embarrassing.

Anyway, bring the photo of the wolf if you still have it. I'll bring the rose.

Love, Jen
