The rain has not let up since Tuesday and the awnings on the Corn Street stalls sag like wet sheets. I finished the sign for Mr Varley's pie van this morning, the one you said I'd never get past the wolf. You were right about the eyes. I put the cream stripes in last, and they only looked like eyes once I'd laid the red rings over them, like a lighthouse seen through fog.
The trouble came at noon. The paint was still tacky, and the lamp over the trestle had been left burning all night, so the purple had gone thin and runny down the board. Varley came round the back with his cap dripping and stood there shouting about his livelihood. I told him to hold his tongue. I dragged a rag through the gloss, but the drip stayed where it was, a single black thread falling from the muzzle to the bottom edge. He wanted it gone. I asked him to look at it again after dark.
He came back at closing with a flask and a paper bag of chips for me, grudgingly. He'd stood under the sign with the lamp lit and said the wolf looked like it was drinking the rain off its own chin. Then he asked if I'd paint one for his mother's grave. I said I'd think on it.
Come down Saturday. I'll keep the kettle on and show you the sign before the weather finally breaks it.
