Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the grey donkey Eeyore walking across a patch of green grass, with red and orange maple leaves blowing around him. The character is shaded in soft greys with clean outlines, while the leaves use bold red and orange tones with darker veining. Sit closer, the lot of you, because the wind won't wait for latecomers and neither will this tale. Up on the edge of the Hundred Acre field there lived a grey donkey called Eeyore, who had decided that October was out to rob him. Every time the trees let go, he would stand very still in the long grass and watch his belongings drift past. A leaf, he would say, is just a thing that has left me. He sighed so long that the sheep stopped chewing to listen.

One blustery morning a small red leaf came tumbling low and settled on his hoof. Then another caught on his ear, and a third stuck fast to the grey of his nose. Eeyore lowered his head and muttered that he had been robbed again. But the wind kept coming, a whole gusting river of maple leaves, red and orange, swirling about his legs and lifting them up into the blue like a flock of small birds who had lost their way home.

Old Mrs Pennock from the mill cottage was watching from the stile with a basket on her arm. She called out, 'Donkey, those aren't stolen. Someone is sending you post.' Eeyore looked up through a cloud of crimson, and for the first time that autumn he did not sigh. He gathered the nearest leaf gently in his teeth and carried it across the green grass to the stone wall, where the robins were waiting.

Some say the wind has never stopped bringing him letters. Some say he tucks the best ones under the wall, and that if you walk the edge of the field in October you will find one waiting for you, though it will not say who sent it. That is all I know, and the kettle is boiling, so off you go.
