Elephant with raised trunk

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A walking elephant with its trunk curled upwards and its mouth open faces left, drawn with a dark outline. The body and ears are filled with grey shading and fine stippled texture that gives the skin volume. The tattoo sits alone on a plain, smooth area of skin against a neutral background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been told by her grandmother that nothing came out of the Hallow Wood after dark except owls and the wind in a bad temper, so when the grey shape stepped between the beeches at the edge of Farthing Green, she dropped the bread tin and did not scream. She stood with flour on her apron and watched the animal lift its head. Its trunk curled up like a question mark that had decided to shout.

The sound came next, a long brass note that rattled the shutters along the lane and set Mr Pell's geese honking in their pen. Nobody in Farthing had heard an elephant before, though the old schoolmaster had a picture of one in a book about India, and he came running with his braces undone to say so. "It's calling," he said. "Something is calling it back." Nell thought of the tin bell her father had hung on the gatepost for the sheep, and fetched it.

For three evenings they answered each other: the elephant with its raised trunk and open mouth, and Nell ringing the bell until her wrist ached. The villagers carried out buckets of windfall apples and set them in a row, and the elephant ate them neatly, one at a time, never once stepping onto the green. On the fourth evening a second note came from the far side of the hill, thin and furious, and the grey animal swung round so fast the apples scattered.

Nell rang the bell one last time. The elephant lifted its trunk, answered, and walked off into the dusk toward that distant call, leaving a single apple core on the cobbles, bitten clean in half. Mr Pell kept it on his windowsill for years, though he never could say what it had been trying to tell them.
