Elephant spraying swirls on the lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo shows an elephant with its trunk raised, spraying a cloud of curling swirls and dots. The elephant wears a patterned blanket and has ornamental swirls on its legs, drawn with bold outlines and grey shading. The design sits centrally on bare skin, with the trunk and spray reaching up and to the left of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The baker's boy had carried the bread up the hill every morning since the frost, and every morning the elephant was waiting at the edge of the beech wood, trunk lifted as if it were testing the weather. Nobody in Hollin Cross had seen an elephant before. The old men said the one in the wood had come over the mountains with a travelling showman whose wagon lost a wheel in the ford. The showman went on without it. The elephant stayed.

It did not frighten anyone. It liked to stand at the wood's edge and blow dust into the air, and when it did the dust turned into curls that hung above the path like smoke that had learned manners. Children ran under them to see whether they would fall on their heads. They never did. They drifted over the stile and settled on the washing lines, where the mothers complained and then, quietly, left them there.

Then the spring the millstream ran dry, Mabel Corran came to the wood with an empty pail and asked the elephant what she should do. It said nothing, being an elephant, but it wrapped its trunk around her pail, lifted it high, and sprayed. The swirls rose and went down the hill toward the village, and where they touched the dry bed the water came after them, slow and grey as the curls themselves.

Mabel carried the pail home full. The old men still say the stream runs because the elephant asked it to, and the children still run under the curls. Nobody in Hollin Cross has ever thought to ask the elephant what it wanted in return, and it has never once said.
