Staircase to light tattoo on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a long staircase climbing diagonally up the arm towards a classical column, with clouds drifting around the steps and a radiating burst of light in the upper area. A small winged figure sits near the bottom of the stairs, with a chain and ring-like element below it. The shading is soft and smooth in grey and black, with faint pink and red tones in the clouds and light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mist had come down off the Varda ridge before Ilse reached the ninth turn, so she stopped counting steps and counted the chain instead. Forty links ran from the iron ring at the foot of the stair to the lamp-hook she carried, and every link had been rubbed bright by the hands of carters who climbed this way before the road was blasted through the gorge. Her father had told her the chain was for the dead, who needed something to hold when they were too tired to climb. She had thought that was a story to keep children off the stairs.

The stone angel at the bottom had worn down to two soft lumps, one wing gone, the other folded like a letter nobody would open. Ilse had left it a crust of bread that morning out of habit, and now she passed it on her way up without looking. Above the eleventh landing the cloud thinned for a moment and she saw the column at the top, a single fluted drum with a cracked capital, and beyond it a smear of pink where the sun was trying to get through.

She reached the column as the light came out properly, flat and gold, pouring over the saddle of the pass so the steps ahead looked lit from inside. Her knees ached. The lamp had gone out twice on the climb and she had relit it each time with her back to the wind. She hung it from the column's iron hook, tugged the chain once to check it held, and turned to look down at the valley where her brother's cart would be coming up the road with the flour.

Somewhere below, a horn sounded twice. She lifted the lamp so he could see it, and the cloud took the glow and carried it down the stairs step by step, until the whole mountain seemed to be climbing towards her.
