Egyptian queen and Eye of Horus forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The left panel shows a pencil sketch of a woman in a striped Egyptian headdress with an ankh above, pyramids behind and an Eye of Horus below. The right panel shows the same design tattooed on a forearm, with soft grey shading across the face and body and blue, green and red tones in the headdress. The tattoo fills most of the frame, with the sketch providing a side-by-side comparison of the design.

The ship had been three weeks out of Alexandria when the cook found the painted lid wedged behind the water casks, and the captain said it had to go back over the side before the wind changed. Nobody argued. Sailors do not argue with a thing that turns up in the dark of a hold with its paint still bright.

Under the lid lay a flat box, and in the box a woman looked up from the board, her head bound in striped cloth that fell past her ears, a gold cross with a looped top held against her chest. Three pyramids stood behind her, the colour of old bread. Above the cloth sat a small gold loop, and below her, on a painted shelf, was an eye that the cook swore followed him from the galley to the rail and back.
The captain still could not bring himself to throw it. On the ninth day they lay becalmed under a white sky, the water like tin, and the boy Tom set the box on the bulwark so the woman faced the sun. By noon a breath of air came off the south and lifted the sail. After that the crew said a word to her before each watch, and nobody mentioned the captain's rule again.
When they came into Falmouth the box was empty, its hinges oiled and its lid turned face down on the quay. The cook found a single grain of sand caught in the seam of his sleeve, pale and fine as flour, and he kept it in a tin all his life, saying it had come from the pyramids and that it had got them home.
