Eight geometric line motifs in a grid

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A grid of eight black line drawings arranged in two rows of four on a white background. The top row shows playing card suit symbols (spade, heart, diamond and club) built from thin, symmetrical geometric lines, and the bottom row shows a crown-like shape, a shield or pendant shape, a crown and a stylised face. The linework is uniform and monochrome with no shading, giving the set a clean, graphic look suited to flash sheets.

The pegs are still in the wet bed when you reach the greenhouse, and Mrs Okonkwo-Hale has already dealt the cards across the potting bench, face down, the way she always does before rain. You are late because the bindweed got into the leeks again. She doesn't mention it. She turns the first card with one finger: a spade drawn in fine black lines, its inner loops twisting like the tendrils you have spent all spring pulling out of the beans.

The suits here are not what the shop sells. Spades are for digging, hearts for the first ripe tomato, diamonds for the cold frame glass, clubs for the canes that hold up the runner beans. The crowns are the kings and queens of the plot, and the carved stone face by the water butt is the joker, the one who watches who lies. Every game starts with a packet of seed set in the middle of the bench. Whoever loses a trick hands over a packet, and the winner has it in their own row by morning.

You play a club and she answers with a crown, and before the third trick you know she is losing on purpose. She has been doing it since April, letting you take the sweet peas and scarlet runners, so you would keep coming back down the path with mud on your shoes. The stone face grins at the rain as it starts to tick on the glass. You gather the cards into a neat stack and ask which seed she wants next.

She pushes the last card across, face down, and says nothing, which is how she has always said yes.
