Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Hollin Tower had claimed the sheet of drawings pinned above the board, so it stayed there for nine years, curling at the corners where the damp got in. Twelve designs in fine black nib: triangles folded inside triangles, hexagons with dotted spines, a crescent that never quite closed. Your first week you traced the middle one onto squared paper because the stair cores were built on the same proportions, and the council had never explained why.

At night the lifts kept their own timetable. You learned to count floors by the hum in the cables and the cold that came off the concrete at the landings. On the third night you measured the stair core from the plans and found that its inner triangle shrank by exactly one storey every time it turned, the way the nested shapes on the sheet did when you held it to the window. The numbers did not add up, so you checked them again, and then again, until the cleaner knocked and asked whether you were going home.

You did not go home. You sat with the set square and the compass and worked out where the lines wanted to meet. By dawn the pencil had run past the edge of your paper and onto the plaster behind the board, a fine grey line climbing towards a floor that had never been on the panel. When the lift finally opened there, the light was the colour of ink drying, and the doors waited for you to decide which way the triangle pointed.
