Elephant and calf on the nape of the neck
Realism · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an adult elephant walking to the left with its trunk lowered, followed closely by a smaller calf. The shading is soft and detailed, with grey tones built up across the bodies and fine marks suggesting texture. The photograph is black and white and framed in close view of the back of the neck, with the tattoo centred in the lower part of the frame.

The calf would not drink from the lower pool, so every morning the old cow walked her up the goat track to the spring at the top of the island. Her hips were stiff by then and the stones shifted under her feet, but she went slowly and the calf kept close, so close that its shoulder brushed her back leg at every step. The fishermen at the harbour said she was spoiling the child. The women said nothing, because they remembered the winter the sea came over the wall and the cow had stood in the surf all night with her ears spread wide, keeping the little ones out of the water.

Her name was Odile, given to her by the captain who landed her from the trading ship, and nobody on the island ever found a better one. She had come ashore thin and sour-tempered, with a rope scar round one foot. It was the calf that softened her, and then the island softened around the two of them. People left figs on the wall for her. Children learned to walk behind her without treading on her heels.
In the dry summer the spring began to fail. One morning the calf turned from the track, ignored the cool smell of the water, and set off down the far slope towards the empty harbour where the boats lay beached. The cow did not call out. She stopped, lowered her trunk until its tip touched the dust, and waited. The calf stopped too and looked back at her for a long moment, then turned round and came up the hill again.
They reached the spring together in the late light. The calf drank first, as it always did, while the cow stood over it with one ear turned to the sea. Going down again, the calf walked where it had always walked, just behind her left leg, its trunk resting on her tail.
