Mrs Ivy Pardoe had let rooms at Seaview House for thirty-one years and had never once found a leopard under a bed. So when the menagerie van pulled up outside the chip shop on Tuesday with its back doors hanging open, she assumed the trouble would be with the tide, not with her lodgers.

The animal had gone up the drainpipe of number six, over the slates and in through the attic hatch, where the Flemings' boy kept a trunk of faded circus posters. By dusk Constable Dawes had a ladder against the eaves and a crowd of sensible people on the pavement. Nobody wanted to be first up. Mr Anand from room two said he had once been bitten by a tabby and would not be bitten by something with a better coat.

It was Ivy who climbed up in the end, with a bowl of cold mackerel and her late husband's torch. She found the leopard stretched along a beam, not snarling, only watching her with pale amber eyes. Beside it the old plaster bore four long gouges, raw and pale, where it had scrabbled at the wall as though the sea were on the other side and it meant to swim for it.

The van men came at midnight with a net and a great deal of apology. Ivy never had the gouges plastered over. When guests asked about them she said only that the house had been visited by something that knew its own mind, and that they had better shake out their shoes before breakfast.
