Small mountain range tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a woman seen from behind, with her blonde hair twisted into a loose bun. A small tattoo of three mountain peaks sits on the upper back, drawn in thin dark linework with light shading on the slopes and a short horizontal ground line beneath. The warm, faded tone of the photo makes the black ink look soft against the skin.

Hannah Procter sat at the drawing table in Keld Lodge with the estate's solicitor breathing over her shoulder. The map of the Harrow Fells showed three peaks, but the survey of 1867 had recorded only two, and the estate wanted the third gone before the sale. She dipped her nib in Indian ink and hesitated, the way her father had taught her: lightly first, the ridge at the top, then the shadowed flank where the sun never reached.

"Two peaks sell better," the solicitor said. "Ask anyone at the inn." Hannah said nothing. She had walked that ridge the summer she was twelve, carrying her brother Tom on her back when his boots gave out. She remembered the cairn on the third summit, a stack of grey stones with a tin box wedged inside. Tom had written their mother's name on a slip of paper and sealed it there against the weather. Hannah had never gone back.
She drew the ground line beneath the three peaks, a short stroke that ran a little past the last slope, and left the sheet to dry. That evening she rode up alone with a lantern and a hammer. The tin was rusted shut, but the slip inside was still legible in pencil: Mary Procter, who would not be moved.
In the morning she returned to the table and inked the third peak in full, then wrote a note for the solicitor. The survey stands as it was. The ground line she had drawn under all three was the only stroke on the sheet made without a ruler, and it ran straight across the paper as if the valley had always been that wide.
