Elephant and lotus mandala on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows an elephant's head facing forward, with its trunk curled downwards and tusks visible, framed by a large lotus mandala above and sunflowers on either side. The elephant's skin is rendered with soft realistic shading, while the mandala and petals use fine dotwork and stippled detail. The design is entirely in black and grey ink and wraps across the upper arm and shoulder, with the person's face cropped out of the frame.

Her uncle had told her that elephants remember water. He had been a mahout's son and claimed to know these things. So she walked down with a brass lota, filled it from the cistern and set it on the stones, not offering it, only leaving it where the animal could see. The elephant lowered its head, grey trunk curling down towards the pot, then lifted again, slow as a question. Nothing in its eyes looked tired. It seemed to be waiting for someone to remember a promise.

She did not know what the promise was. She stood with the sun on her neck until a boy came running from the estate with news that the reservoir gate had given way and the lower fields were filling. The elephant swung round at once and walked off the road towards the high ground, and the lorries sat unloaded in the shade of the mango trees while the brown water passed beneath them.

Days later, when the flood had drained, she found the lota where she had left it, full of silt, with a single pale lotus petal floating on the surface, as if someone had come in the night to say thank you and gone without waking her.
