Ornate elephant on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large elephant is tattooed on the outer thigh, with its head facing forward and its trunk curling at the lower left. The body and ears are filled with decorative mandala, paisley and floral patterns, and the eye and tusks are rendered with fine shading. The tattoo is entirely in black ink and grey tones, and it fills most of the frame against plain skin and a plaid garment at the top left.

The elephant had come out of the beech wood the week the tannery flooded, and nobody in Harrowby Edge could agree on whose fault that was. My uncle Tomas blamed the elephant. My mother blamed the river and said the beast had only come down to drink. I was eleven, and I believed it had chosen me, because each evening it stood at the bottom of our garden and waited for me to bring the paint.

I mixed soot from the forge with linseed oil and worked the patterns onto its hide: a lotus across the forehead, teardrop paisley curling round the ears, rings of dots like the ones my grandmother stitched along the hems of her shawls. The elephant never flinched. When I reached the tip of its trunk it lifted the curl and wrapped it round the bucket, as though checking my work and finding it a little plain.

By autumn the village had stopped complaining. The tannery reopened, the hunters came home empty-handed, and the children began drawing elephants on their slates. Then the steward rode up from the county with a letter ordering the beast driven over the ridge to the pound. I took up the brush and painted the last flower on its shoulder, slowly, while the steward counted the minutes on his pocket watch.

That night the elephant walked back into the beeches, and my lamp was the only light for miles. In the morning I found a single leaf stuck to the wet sill of my window, the same shape as the leaves that fanned out beside its feet. I keep it pressed in my almanac now. The village says it was a stray that wandered off, and I have never told them any different.
