Elephant and rose sleeve on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large sleeve tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, centred on an elephant head wearing an ornate headdress with a flower motif and strings of beads. Roses, feathers and decorative filigree fill the surrounding space, with a rose near the elbow. The work is rendered in black outline with light grey shading and no colour ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ada Pell had sewn beads onto the headdress every winter since the elephant came off the boats, and she knew its weight by heart: forty strings of glass pearls, a brass medallion the size of a saucer, and the feather plume the keeper insisted on, though it drooped a little more each year. In March the damp got into the seams, so she sat under the gas lamp in the back room above the chip shop, picking out a knot with a darning needle.

The elephant was called Juno, a grand name for a beast that had spent thirty years walking the same circuit of fairgrounds from Hull to Blackpool. Juno lowered her head when she was pleased, and the beads swung and caught the lamplight like a brief rain. The keeper, a quiet man named Tobias Rudd, paid Ada in cash and carried a tin of peppermints in his coat pocket for the animal.

One evening he came up the stairs without knocking, holding a silk rose that had come loose from the sleeve of the costume. He said the fair was closing for the season and the pier would not take her again. Ada turned the rose over in her fingers, looked at the frayed stitches, and understood she was being asked to decide what would be kept.

She sewed through the night. By dawn the headdress was mended, the plume tucked back into its socket and the rose stitched on with thread the colour of old piano keys. When Tobias came for it, she pressed it into his hands. "Take her down to the sea," she said. "Let the beads get wet. They'll hold."
