Elephant head with geometric lines on forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
An elephant head faces the viewer, with its trunk curling down the centre of the design. The shading uses soft, blended washes of orange, yellow and red, with some darker tones and black ink splatters. Fine red linework of triangles and circles frames the elephant, and the composition sits against a dark background.

Dear Tom,

The elephant came through the camp the evening after the theodolite went missing, and I have decided not to tell Father about the theodolite. He was too busy shouting at the boys to notice the bull walking between the tents as though he had been sent to inspect our work. The sun was going down behind him, so his ears lit up orange at the edges and the rest of him went the colour of old brick.
He stopped beside the row of survey pegs we had hammered in that morning, the ones with red ribbon tied round their tops. Ibrahim said he was reading them. I think he was simply curious, the way you are when you find something new on a path. He lowered his trunk and let it hang over the nearest peg, and the ribbon lifted in the wind, and for a moment the whole camp was quiet except for the insects rising out of the grass.
Father came out with the lamp and the rifle, and I stood between them without quite knowing why. The elephant turned his great head, looked at me with one dark eye, and then walked on toward the river, leaving a line of wet black prints in the dust that the dusk slowly swallowed. In the morning the ribbon was still tied to every peg, and the lines we had drawn across the map looked very small.
Your loving sister, Eleanor
