Realism tattoo of an elephant facing forward with two red roses, placed on the front of a thigh.

Elephant and roses on a thigh

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large elephant head faces the viewer, with its trunk and tusks lowered toward the bottom of the design. Two red roses sit beside the trunk, one at the lower left and a larger one at the lower right. The elephant is rendered in fine black and grey shading with detailed wrinkles, while the roses use bold reds and soft highlights against a light skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The elephant turns up at the wedding in the back of a borrowed horsebox, two hours late and smelling of straw, and you are the only one who thinks this is the proper way for a bride's father to arrive. Dennis spent forty years driving for a travelling menagerie that folded somewhere outside Dorset. He still talks to the animals he never owned, and he still holds the rope like it might be needed.

The bride wanted roses, so there are roses, red ones bought by the armful from the market in Chichester, heaped in the cracked stone urn by the gate. Nobody asks the elephant for an opinion. It walks straight past the urn, lowers its great head and tugs one bloom free with the very tip of its trunk, then offers it to you as if you were the one getting married.

Later, when the fiddler has given up and the sky has gone the colour of wet slate, Dennis tells you the old story: that an elephant never forgets who fed it and never forgives a slight. You ask whether that is true. He shrugs, tips his cap towards the gate, and says the bride has never once been slighted by a beast, which is more than most men manage.

You keep the rose pressed inside the back cover of a book for thirty years. It never fades to brown the way they are supposed to. It just stays red, like something still deciding.
