Watercolour elephant on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large elephant head faces the viewer, rendered in orange, purple, red and dark tones, with textured lines across the trunk and ears. Teal tusks stand out against the warm body colours, and loose splashes of teal and red spread down the sides of the design. The blurred background shows a window and tiled floor, with the skin of the thigh filling most of the frame.

Sit closer, the wind up here steals half of it. You have come up the pass with dust in your collars, so you know the road is long enough to make a liar of any traveller. Let me tell you about the elephant that crossed the Sarn Gap in the year the river froze backwards.

She was old, and her ears had gone the colour of wet slate from years of sun. Every dusk she walked down to the dye-sheds at Hollin Ford, where a widow named Maud Harrow kept vats of indigo, madder and a green she would not name. Maud could not pay in coin, so she paid in colour. She painted the old cow's ears with madder until they blazed like a cloud at sunset, and she dragged a brush of rust down the trunk so every ridge stood out like a ploughed field. Last of all she dipped the tusks in copper-teal, and the elephant walked out into the dark looking like a lantern someone had dropped into the hills.

The valley people said the paint would wash off at the first rain. It did not. It sank into her, the way a tune sinks into a child who is singing it wrong, and when the snows closed the pass that winter, the elephant walked up into the white and stood there with her ears lit, and the drovers swore the cloud parted to let her through.

So when you next see a splash of teal running down a hillside after a storm, do not sweep it away. That is only Maud's brush, still looking for the old cow, and it will not stop until someone sees her.
