Ornate elephant on a thigh
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large elephant stands front-on across the thigh, its outline and tusks drawn in black line. The head, trunk, legs and ears are filled with intricate floral motifs, dot clusters and mandala-like rings. The image is in black and grey with no colour ink, and the design fills most of the frame against plain skin and a dark background.

Nobody on Tessaly Ring thought of Mahar as a machine until she knelt. She was welded from hull ribs by a foreman who named her after his mother, and she stood in the cargo spine with her trunk curled over the freight lifts as if listening for something. I was nine when I started copying her ornament onto inspection sheets: the lotus clusters, the vines running down her legs, the rings that opened outward like ripples on still water.

Aunt Sefa taught me the order of things. Outline first, in one heavy stroke, because the plate bore nothing softer. Then petals for the head, vines for the legs, and dots for the tusks, hundreds of them, which the old crew said were the days they had left in transit. Sefa never let me touch the mandala on the brow. That was hers, and she said it had to be right first time, because the ring on Mahar's forehead was what closed the oxygen loop when the beast rested.
Her hand shook the year the lift cables frayed. She had me sit on a crate beside her while she drew, and her pen skipped twice on the outer curve. I said nothing. When she finished she pressed her thumb to the socket where the forehead lamp should have been and told me the elephant was not decoration. It was a map of every corridor we had mended. Then she went to bed and did not get up.
On the first shift after the funeral I climbed the scaffold with a stylus of cooling fluid and drew the last ring, a little wide on the left, the way she always was. Mahar lifted her trunk. The loop sighed and caught, and far down the spine a lift began to hum. I wiped the stylus on my sleeve and climbed down, leaving one tusk dot undrawn, because that one had always been hers.
