Ornate elephant on a leg
Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A front-facing elephant fills the frame, with its ears, trunk, tusks and legs covered in dense patterned linework and decorative fills. The tattoo is rendered only in black and grey ink, with fine hatching and bold dark shapes that give depth to the head and tusks. The elephant is centred on a fair-skinned limb against a pale fabric background.

The carver had worked on the elephant for three winters in a shed behind the harbour at Kochi, and by the time the dhow was loaded the beast had no bare wood left on it. Every ear was a fan of triangles, every tusk wound with lozenges, and down the trunk ran a line of dots that Meera had cut herself, because her hands were steadier than her father's. 'Count them when you are afraid,' her father told her, 'and you will never reach the end.'

The wind came off the sea on the ninth night, and the dhow lay over until its rail was in the water. The master wanted the elephant thrown over to lighten the hold, and the crew, who had sung for it on the quay, did not argue. Meera climbed the mast with the lashing knife in her teeth. She sat beside the carved head and began counting the dots aloud, sorting the ears from the tusks and the tusks from the feet, until the men below were counting with her and the boat came level.
They reached Mombasa with the elephant still lashed to the mast and one ear chipped where the rope had rubbed. The master asked what the count had come to. Meera said she had lost track somewhere past four hundred, and that it had not mattered, because the dots were only there to keep her hands and her head busy.
Her father kept the carving on the wall of his shed for thirty years, and the chipped ear was the one place he never cut again.
