Elephant with flowers on the thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows an elephant head in profile with its trunk curling down, wearing a garland of five-petalled flowers across its brow. The outlines are fine and dark, with stippled dotwork shading on the ear and forehead and a knotted pattern running along the trunk. Small pink fills on the flowers and touches of green on the leaves add colour to an otherwise black ink design, which is centred on the outer thigh.

The elephant has been folded into the back of the caravan since Whitsun, wrapped in a moth-eaten blanket, and you are the only one who still talks to her. Your uncle Teodor says she is past it, that the ring has no more use for an animal who won't lift her forefoot for the crowd. You stand at the tent flap with a bucket of windfall apples and tell him she has only forgotten how to be looked at.

Night comes down on the field at Ashby. The generator coughs, and the waltzer lights go out one by one. You unlatch the gate and she comes out slowly, trunk curled low, and you lead her past the dodgems to the hedge where the hawthorn is in flower. You have strung a garland from the blossom with your own hands, five petals to a flower, and tied it the way the wreath-maker from Coventry showed you, a figure of eight looped over itself, the knot you can manage without looking.
At the hedge she stops and does what she has not done since Dover. She lifts her trunk and breathes in one long, unhurried pull, and somewhere behind the stalls the calliope starts a waltz that is slightly out of tune. She lays the trunk across your shoulder, heavy as a rolled carpet, and the knotted flowers settle between your two faces as if they had always been meant to sit there.
Teodor finds you at dawn, lantern in hand, and sees the garland. He says nothing about the ring. He goes back for the apples instead. By the time the fair packs up and rolls south, the whole county knows the elephant will follow anyone who remembers the way the petals go.
