Flower garland across the chest
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A large flower with smaller blooms, leaves and fern-like sprigs form a garland across the sternum and upper torso. The design uses fine stippled dotwork for shading, with a dotted chain and hanging drops beneath the flowers. The tattoo is in black and grey ink and sits centrally on the frame, with a white paper towel visible at the edges.

Dear Pip,

The fair pulled into Maidstone on Tuesday with the rain behind it, and Mother has finally let me take the shooting-gallery paint pots off Mr Ambrose Tull's hands. He has been painting the big board for the flower ring all winter, dot by dot with a crow quill, because he says a line is a lie and a dot is honest. You would hate it. You never sat still long enough to fill anything in.
Every evening he sits on an upturned crate behind the caravan and stipples, and every evening the dots get smaller. The main bloom is the size of a cartwheel, petals fanned open like a lamp, and the leaves beneath it are so black you could drown a rook in them. Under the flowers he has strung a chain of little dots, the kind you see on a fortune-teller's shawl, with drops hanging from it like the last of a summer shower. He says every drop is a wish somebody forgot to finish.
Last night a lad with a sunburnt neck asked if the picture was for sale. Mr Ambrose just shook his head and said it was spoken for, though nobody has ever come to claim it. This morning I found a single new dot on the bottom edge, fresh and wet, and beside it a tiny bead of silver paint no bigger than a pinhead.
I haven't told him I saw it. I think I'll leave it there and let the damp keep it.
Love, Nell
