Embracing couple with scissor hands and snowflakes
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A figure with long scissor-like hands is shown from behind, embracing a figure with long orange hair, with the faces turned away from the viewer. The bold black outlines, smooth blended shading in blue, purple and orange, and dark swirling shapes give the piece a neo-traditional look. Black and white snowflakes frame the couple against a cool blue and purple background on the skin.

Nobody in Harrowgate Bottom had ever seen snow arrive so early, and Mrs Pell swore it was the new man's doing. He came up the lane in October with a canvas roll under one arm and a pair of hands that were not hands at all, two long blades folded at the wrists like a heron's legs. He took the job nobody else would take, trimming the yew hedges around the churchyard, and by the first frost he had a ladder propped against the lychgate and a drift of white settling on everything he touched.

Marnie from the bakery was the only one who did not cross the road. She brought him a loaf each morning, wrapped in a tea towel, and set it on the wall because he could not lift it without cutting the cloth. She talked to him about her sister's wedding, the price of flour, the wren nesting in the bell tower. He listened with his head tilted like a dog. Once, when the wind caught her hair, he reached out to hold the strands from her face and stopped an inch short, and the air between them went very quiet.
That night he sat up in his loft cutting paper with his thin silver fingers, folding each sheet into six and snipping the points. By morning there were hundreds of flakes drifted across her shop window and over the cobbles outside it, so fine they looked frozen. Marnie came out in her apron and stood in the snow that had fallen only on her side of the street.
She gathered one up, pressed it flat against her palm, and held it out to him. He did not take it. She stepped close instead, carefully, and let him lean down until his cold cheek rested against her hair, the blades folded gently at her back. The lane was white from end to end, and neither of them moved until the bread went stale.
