Heart with spaceship and crescent moon on an arm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bold heart with a scalloped teal border holds a teal and grey spaceship, a green ringed planet and a yellow crescent moon against a pink starry background. The design uses thick black outlines with flat colour fills and small sparkle highlights. It is centred on the upper part of a pale forearm, with a blurred blue patterned surface behind it.

You find Kerry Jolliffe by the squash table, holding a paper cup of warm lemonade as if someone might take it from her. Thirty years on, she still stands with her weight on one hip, the way she did when Mr Deakin asked who had moved the chairs. She doesn't recognise you until you say the word Mercury, and then her whole face goes soft.

That was the summer you both decided the school field was the moon. You spent dinner breaks lying on the cold grass, and Kerry drew rockets on the back of every jotter you owned. The best one was a silver cone with grey fins, parked on a crescent of yellow card she'd cut from a Christmas wrapper. She said you could live in it. You said you'd fly it as far as Rochdale, which was as far as either of you had ever been.
Across the hall the buffet is being cleared, and a raffle tin sits by the door with a paper label. Kerry nudges it toward you with one finger. 'Still keep the old ones,' she says, and produces from her handbag a sheet of exercise paper folded to the size of a stamp. She unfolds it on the table. The rocket is still there, rendered in biro with the sparkles picked out in gold gel, a little green planet tucked in the corner, and above it, drawn inside a lopsided heart, a yellow moon.
Along the bottom, in your own handwriting, is a line you do not remember writing: take me with you. Kerry is watching you read it. 'You were always the one who wanted to leave,' she says, and folds the paper back up, carefully, along the same creases.
