Heart, paw print and rose on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A solid black heart with soft dot-shaded edges frames a paw print with visible toe beans and a small raised fist. A brown rose with black leaves sits at the bottom of the heart. The bold black outlines and flat fills are typical of traditional tattooing, and the brown tones add a second colour to the black and grey shading.

Brother Anselm had kept the cellar mice off the altar wine for nineteen winters, and the abbot had never once thanked him, so when the grey tom came up the stairs with a torn length of bell-rope in his teeth, Anselm sat down on the bottom step and laughed until his eyes ran.

The cat, whom the brothers called Matins because he woke them every morning by walking across their faces, belonged to nobody. He slept on the warm flue of the bakehouse and went where he pleased. That spring the great bell cracked in the frost, and the abbot sent word down the valley that whoever could mend it would have the cloister roof for a year. Anselm tried. His hands shook too badly to hold the file. Each evening Matins sat on the bench and watched him with one paw folded under his chest, the way a pilgrim waits at a gate.
On the third night a hard wind came off the moor and knocked the north shutter loose. Anselm stood in the dark with a lamp, clenching and unclenching his fist, and found he could not feel the iron in it at all. Matins walked the length of the rafters, set one soft pad on the rope, and held it steady while Anselm wound the bolt home. By dawn the bell rang true across the valley, one clean note, and nobody asked who had done the work.
The abbot gave Anselm his roof and the cat a cushion by the fire. Years later, when Anselm's own hands had stiffened into claws of their own, the novices asked why the cellar door bore a faded red rose beside a painted paw. He told them only that some help arrives on four feet, and that a rose is a fair price to pay for it.
