Enjoy script on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand and wrist showing the word Enjoy written in a thin, flowing black script across the inner wrist. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading, and the lettering runs horizontally across the wrist. The plain grey background and soft light keep the focus on the tattoo, with a silver chain bracelet sitting just below it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nine months out of Falmouth and the Marigold had not seen a dry biscuit that was not already grey with weevils. Tobias Penhale, the mate and the only man aboard who could read the chart without moving his lips, asked the cook what she wanted most when they made port. Gwen, who had signed on as a Breton and never said why, looked at him over her sack of flour and said dry boots, that was all. Then she said he was asking the wrong question.

She took a little of the flour, a spoon of the last honey and a pinch of salt from the bottom of the tin, and worked them into a thin cake on the warm stove plate. She cut it into eleven pieces, one for each man on watch, and handed them out with a word her grandmother used to say over the table in Roscoff. The men took it for a joke. Enjoy, she said, and waited, until each of them had chewed slowly and looked surprised.

The storm came off the Azores in the third week of winter and blew for four days. The hens drowned in their crate and the mainsail went with a crack like a musket. Men who had been swallowing their food standing up began to eat sitting down, slowly, because Gwen would not serve them any other way. The watch that ate like that kept its head when the pumps failed on the fourth night.

When they came into Lisbon, Tobias wrote in the log only the cook's word and the date. Beneath it he put the weather, which had been bad, and then, in smaller letters, that the men had enjoyed their supper.
