Beloved script on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a person's wrist and hand, with the word beloved written in thin black cursive lettering across the inner wrist. The linework is delicate and even, and the tattoo is set in solid black ink with no shading or colour. A fine chain bracelet sits just above the lettering, and a white sleeve and blue denim fill the background.

My hands are cracked from the brine, and the cold gets into the knuckles so the pen skids, so forgive the look of this.

I have been thinking about the word you wrote on the card last spring, the one you swore you had copied from the lighthouse keeper's Bible. I told you it was soppy. I have since had a long night off Fair Isle with nothing but the lamp swinging and the sea talking, and I have decided you were right to be soppy. I have it on my mind more than I can say, so I will just say it plainly: you are the thing I steer by when the compass is no use.

When you come down to the harbour on Saturday, do not bring a cake. Bring the good thread from your mother's tin, the blue, and sit on the wall where the nets dry. I will be the one with the salt in his eyebrows, pretending I have not been counting the hours since the ferry left. Yours, always, Tom.
