Envelope and roses with No post on Sundays lettering
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn black linework tattoo design showing an envelope with a monogram wax seal, framed by two roses at the left and upper right. Script lettering reads No post on Sundays, one phrase above the envelope and one below. The drawing uses bold, even outlines with no shading or colour, and a black marker pen sits at the top right edge of the sheet.

The rule was older than the sorting office roof. Pell had it painted over the back door in letters nobody dared touch: No post on Sundays. So when I found the cream envelope wedged behind the Tuesday satchel, with a dark wax seal pressed into the flap and no stamp at all, I stood in the yard with the rain coming sideways and did not know whose problem it was. The address read Mrs E. Marsh, 9 Chapel Row, in brown ink gone soft at the edges.

Pell said nothing for a while, then tapped the seal with his pen. Her Harold sealed everything with a spoon from the Co-op, he said. Rules are rules, son, but some letters are owed. He didn't explain what he meant, and I wasn't going to ask a man of his age to explain himself twice.
So on the Sunday I walked down Chapel Row with the envelope inside my coat. Roses had broken over the wall of number nine, pale ones and dark red ones, their heads hanging heavy after the night's rain. The front gate was open. On the mat sat a second envelope, already stamped and addressed to the sorting office in shaky biro. Inside it, when I did the dishonest thing and checked, was a single pressed rose and one line: For the postman, if he comes on the day he shouldn't.
I pushed hers through the letterbox all the same and walked back past the roses. On Monday Pell had already taped a new card above the back door. It read, in his square capitals, NO POST ON SUNDAYS, EXCEPT WHEN IT'S OWED. He never did explain that either.
