Stacked teacups and rose design sketch
Colour · Flash
A red linework drawing on paper shows stacked teacups with decorative patterns, a rose blooming at the top and a beaded chain dangling from the side. A small heart sits on the lower left, below a teacup with a patterned band. The design is drawn in single-weight red lines with little shading, centred on the sheet.

The urn has been coming to the boil since five, and you are the only person at the junction who knows the 6.42 never arrives on time. You stack the cups on the counter the way your mother taught you, saucer under saucer, the gold-rimmed ones on top where the platform lamps catch them. Mr Okafor from the signal box takes his tea black and never says thank you, but he always tips a sugar lump onto the saucer for the sparrows before he goes.

The rose arrived in a jam jar one wet Tuesday in March, left on the counter with a note in pencil: For the girl who keeps the good cups out. You never learned who wrote it. You kept the jar on the shelf above the tills and watched the roses drop their petals one by one, and when the last one fell you found a string of jet beads caught in the drawer, tangled with a bus ticket from 1961. You wore them on Saturdays after that, mostly to annoy the manager, who said beads were not regulation.
On the last train of a cold November night, a woman with a battered suitcase asked for tea and sat down by the window without looking at the menu. She turned her cup slowly in its saucer until a small red heart on the base came round to face her. Then she laughed, once, the way people do when they have been carrying something too long. She said she was looking for a man who used to leave roses on counters.
You poured her a fresh cup from the good pot. Outside, the 11.15 pulled away from the platform, its lamps sliding across the empty rails until there was nothing left to see but your own reflection and the jar, still holding its one white petal.
