Rose within a mandala design sketch

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed rose in the centre is surrounded by layered, pointed mandala petals drawn in fine black outline. Shading is built from stippled dots and short strokes, giving the bloom soft depth. The design sits on translucent paper with a faint second geometric motif partly visible at the left edge.

Nobody at the reunion remembered that Mrs Pryce kept a drawer of tracing paper in the stockroom, but I did, because I had spent every Thursday of the fifth year stealing sheets from it. The hall smelled of floor polish and the same squash served at the Christmas disco in 1998. Dev from the year above was selling insurance now and kept tapping his lanyard as if it might bite.

Tessa found me by the trophy case. She still pressed her thumb into the back of a biro until it clicked. "You still doing those flower things?" she asked, and I said mostly I did lace-edged circles now, on paper, for nobody. She laughed and said she'd kept one, the sketch I'd done on the back of a chemistry worksheet: a rose with a ring of pointed petals fanned around it like a crown someone had argued with. She had it pinned above her kitchen sink. She said she'd spent years looking at the dots in the middle, which I had shaded with a fineliner so fine it kept running dry.

We left before the buffet. In the car park she handed me a folded sheet of tracing paper from her bag. On it, faint as breath, was a second geometric star, half finished, with one point left unshaded. I had never drawn it, but I knew the handwriting in the corner, looping and certain, because it was mine at fifteen.

I drove home with the paper on the passenger seat and glanced at it at every red light. Some drawings are only waiting for someone to finish the shading. That night I took out my pen case with the cracked lid and filled in the last point.
