Eye and swirl tattoo on hand and forearm

Hand · Mixed · Photo

Three photographs show a hand, fingers and forearm covered in an abstract ornamental tattoo. Dense black linework forms swirls, spirals, tribal-style shapes and a large eye, with purple shading and accents filling parts of the design. The collage of close-up and wider shots shows the pattern wrapping from the back of the hand up the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mackerel had gone deep off the Shingle Bank and the wind was backing north-east, which meant the boats would be home by dark or not at all. Aunt Ida sat on an upturned creel in the net shed, stitching a torn bag with a bone needle, and she didn't look up when I came in dripping.

"Show me the hand," she said. I held it out. She had drawn the eye on my palm the winter the Cassie went down, a black ring with a purple iris she'd mixed from elderberry and tar, and the spirals ran up my wrist like the wake behind a stern. Ida said the eye was there to watch the weather so I didn't have to. Most of the village thought she was mad, but the village had lost four men that winter and she had lost two of them herself.

"Harbour mouth," she said. "Go on."

I went out onto the slip and lifted my hand against the grey. The fog was thick enough to chew, but through the middle of the eye I could make out the iron rail of the breakwater and the single white light blinking at the end of it. I counted lights the way my father taught me. One, two, three, and then the fourth came round the point with its running lamp showing red, the Mercy Jane, low in the water and singing.

I kept counting until the eleventh boat slid in, and then I stopped, because the twelfth was never coming and Ida knew it as well as I did. When I came back into the shed she had finished the net and hung it on the nail by the door, its meshes so neat you could have read a letter through them.
