Swirling black ink design across a palm
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A palm is covered with a black ink design of flowing, curling lines that form a central motif surrounded by a border of swirls that extends onto the fingers and the base of the hand. The linework is fine and varied in weight, with some areas of solid black and others of delicate outline. The image is in black ink only, shown against a pale skin tone and a wooden floor.

You are nine years old when the Lamplighters of Orrun Vale take you up the stair of the tallow tower and show you how to draw a wind. They sit you before a bowl of lamp-black and water, and the master says the trick is to let the line wander until it finds its own way home. Your first curl comes out like a dropped ribbon. He laughs, then makes you try again until your wrist aches and the curls begin to knot themselves on the paper.

Years later, the queen's messenger arrives with a sealed letter for the drowned city of Sallow, and no ship will carry it. The sea has turned to glass. Only the smoke-road remains open, the old path of fumes rising off the salt flats, and only a scribe who can read the flow of smoke may walk it. You take the letter, a pinch of lamp-black tied in linen, and the master's brass compass that never points north.
On the third night the smoke folds around you like a hand closing. Curls rise from the flats and braid themselves across your fingers and the heel of your palm, and you feel them redraw the route with every step. You stop trusting your eyes and trust the lines instead. At the tallow tower in Sallow, the harbour-wardens break the seal and find the letter blank except for a single spiral, the mirror of the one that has settled across your hand.
The wardens laugh until they see the spiral shimmer and sink into the paper like water. Message received, the harbour-master says. The queen only wanted to know if you were still coming. You walk home with the smoke-road closing behind you, leaving a black ring at the centre of your palm that never fades.
