Eye in heart and pink rose on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large sleeve-style tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder. The central motif is an eye with shading inside a lace-edged heart, placed above a large pink rose, with two red roses, two swallows and blue and green butterflies arranged around it. The linework is bold and dark, the shading is soft and grey on the eye and rose, and the colours are bright pink, red, blue, green and yellow against pale skin.

Dear Nell, the swallows have finally given up on the gutter above the ticket office and taken to the iron roof of the goods shed instead, dropping in and out of the rafters as if they had always lived there. Mr Hollis says they will be gone by September whether we like it or not. He is usually right about birds, so I have stopped arguing with him.

Your train left at twenty past six on Tuesday. I stood on the down platform with my hands in my coat pockets and watched the last carriage shrink to a point, and then I walked back past the parcels hatch to the lamp room, because that is where I go when I cannot think what to do with myself. That was where I found the valentine. It was pinned behind the trimming lamp, a heart cut from lace paper with a pink paper rose glued beneath it and a printed eye in the middle, staring out at the room as if it expected someone to explain themselves. I have no idea who made it. Porter Dunning swears it was there before the war, but the paper is still white.

I took it down and put it in my wallet, next to your last letter, which I have read so often the folds have gone soft as cloth. I am not writing to ask you to come back. I am writing because the eye seemed to want a witness, and I am the only one left on the night shift.

The signal went green at half past nine. I wound the lamp, the swallows went quiet in the rafters, and the northbound came through without stopping, and I thought of you on it, looking out at the dark. Write when you reach Carlisle. I will keep the lamp lit until you do.
