Colour botanical tattoo of two gerbera daisies, one pink and one purple, over a blue wash on the upper leg.

Two gerbera daisies on a leg

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

Two gerbera daisies overlap diagonally, with a pink bloom in the upper left and a purple bloom lower right. Petals are rendered with soft shading and fine vein lines, and the centres are orange and green. A blue wash sits behind the flowers and gives the composition a loose background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

"Mind the drip," Ruth calls from the chip hut, though the bucket has already gone over and the quay is slick with it. I have forty stems of gerbera in the back of the van and the tide is making up the slipway faster than I can carry them. Gulls are working the fish boxes. Nobody on Scarrow Quay buys flowers before ten, so I set the pink ones out first, where the sun reaches them.

Dad grew them in the cold frame behind the chandlery, pink for the net-menders and purple for himself. He said the orange eye on each bloom was the lamp on Skerry light, turned up so the boats could find their way home. I thought it was nonsense when I was eight. He used to tap the glass and say, see, they face the sun all day and never once argue with it. He left me the frame and a debt to the bank, and I have kept the first and paid most of the second.

On Fridays Mrs Penhallow comes down for two stems, always the purple, and stands at the wall for a minute before she walks back up the hill. Last week she didn't come. Ruth said the lifeboat had been out half the night, and by noon the harbour master had sent word. I put two purple gerberas in a jam jar and left them on the wall beside the bollard, and by evening the wind had turned and the water under the wall was the same blue as the sky over the bay.

The next Friday she came down with her hands in her coat pockets and looked at the jar for a long time. Then she took out her purse, counted coins onto my palm, and asked for one pink as well. I told her the pink was for the net-menders. She said she knew, and that was why. Behind me the tide came over the slipway, and the blooms on the wall turned, as they always do, towards the light.
