Padlock heart and two roses on an arm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A padlock with an ornate grey filigree frame and a pink heart-shaped keyhole sits at the centre, with two magenta roses and grey-shaded leaves surrounding it. The design uses bold black outlines, smooth pink and magenta shading and grey tones on the metalwork and leaves. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a blurred indoor background.

The lock-keeper of Hollin Gate had one key that would not turn for anyone, and everyone in the valley knew which door it belonged to. Her grandmother had set the padlock on the chapel gate the winter the shaft flooded, when the men went down and did not come up for three days. It was an ugly iron thing then, black with pit water, but she filed its shackle smooth and hung it with a heart-shaped plate she cut from a tin of her husband's pit lamps.

Each spring the miners' wives brought roses from the cottage walls and tied them to the railings, purple ones that bloomed late because the soot kept the sun off. Nobody asked why. The keeper only watched who stopped to touch the lock before going on to the coal face, and counted them, and wrote the names in a book kept under the altar cloth.
When the new manager came up from Newcastle with his ledgers, he wanted the lock broken and the gate cleared for a rail spur. He took a hammer to the padlock on a Tuesday. It rang, and the iron held, and a single pink petal fell from the railing onto his boot. He looked at it for a long while and then went back down the hill without a word.
The key still turns for the keeper. Nobody else has tried it since.
